It was a case of the ol’ “It’s never too late to start…”. “The time to start is now…” etc etc. I’ve never been one for New Year’s resolutions, holding firm to looking after myself physically and emotionally on a regular basis. Sometimes motivation just strikes me and I go with it!
So when I woke up this morning and saw that it was a little cool and cloudy, I thought that it would be a great day to stay in and Netflix… OR… start the ‘Couch to 5k’ challenge!
I’ve been inspired by my running friends and while I enjoy my yoga practice most mornings, I figured today was a good day to try something new and push myself. Try running, they said, it’ll be fun…actually I don’t think anyone mentioned fun at all.
I needed music for this first attempt but couldn’t find the headphone adapter for my new iPhone, so I dug out an old iPod (ancient but still worked and held a list of good tunes!). While it charged I surveyed my running shoe options. Running in Kigali would mean hills and some bricked roads, so I opted for a cross trainer with a little extra grip and support.
Excited, route planned, C25k app loaded, iPod charged, gear on and off I went. Day 1 consisted of 30 minutes alternating walking and running and felt like a very approachable way to start.
It turned into quite an adventure! I was confident about the run but what I didn’t anticipate was the amount of local participation I would encounter on my maiden voyage! I was cheered on, smiled at, waved at, some jogged alongside me and others videoed me! I even pulled a Rocky move at one point, I felt so motivated!
I didn’t want to let anyone down so I pushed myself a little extra. I may have overdone it a bit on Day 1- blistering a toe and tweaking my knee. Perhaps I’ll choose the treadmill for Day 2 so that I’m not pushed to perform 😄.
